University of Manitoba - Library Study  | Winnipeg, MB | Study completed with Moriyama Teshima Architects

The University of Manitoba through collaboration with Educational Consulting Services (ECS) engaged Moriyama Teshima Architects to carry out a feasibility study for the eleven libraries across the Fort Garry and Bannatyne campuses.

Libraries are transforming from primarily being a depository of physical resources to a space where students can access digital knowledge, collaborate with each other and study.

The goal of the feasibility study was to assess how the libraries at the university could be re-configured to optimize seating capacities assigned to study and collaboration. This will be achieved by moving approximately fifty percent of the physical collections across all libraries to an off-site storage facility.

The study transformed data from the Function Space Program (FSP) prepared by ECS into visual blocking diagrams for each level of the libraries. Once the blocking plans had been established, we calculated the total areas per department within each building to assess where departments met, exceeded, or did not meet the FSP requirements.

We developed a phased approach for the campus wide implementation of the study. This took due consideration of the size and complexity of the renovations required for each of the spaces such as mechanical and electrical upgrades and structural modifications. Class D cost estimates were produced to assist the university in future capital fund budgeting.

Following the phasing plan, a high-level building code review for each library space was conducted. This code review was intended to inform the university of the potential code implications resulting from the proposed changes to the building.
